A domestic cleaner keeps the everyday surfaces of your home clean: kitchens, bathrooms, floors, dust, mirrors and bins. Deep-clean tasks and personal chores are usually not included by default.
The core job
A domestic cleaner's job is to keep the everyday surfaces of your home clean and hygienic on a repeating schedule. The exact scope depends on the provider and the number of hours you book, but the following are almost always included in a regular clean:
- Kitchen: worktops, hob, sink, outside of appliances, floor, empty bin.
- Bathrooms: bath, shower, toilet, basin, tiles, mirrors, floor.
- All rooms: dusting reachable surfaces, hoovering carpets, mopping hard floors.
- Emptying rubbish and recycling to the bin.
Usually included on request
- Changing bed linen (usually if you leave clean linen out).
- Loading or unloading the dishwasher.
- Cleaning inside the microwave.
- Wiping small appliances (kettle, toaster).
Not usually included in a regular clean
- Inside the oven.
- Inside the fridge/freezer.
- Cleaning windows on the outside.
- Ironing.
- Washing up large amounts of dishes left from previous days.
- Moving heavy furniture.
- Deep-cleaning limescale off tile grout.
Most of these are available as add-ons or as a one-off deep clean. See what's included in a house cleaning service.
Not part of a cleaner's job at all
- Childcare or pet care.
- Handling controlled substances or biohazards.
- Working at height on an outside ladder.
- Electrical or plumbing work.
