End-of-tenancy cleaning checklist

The tasks landlords and letting agents typically check for at checkout. Miss any of these and you risk a deposit deduction. Allow one to two days for a 2–3 bed property.

Kitchen

  • Clean oven inside and out including door glass and racks
  • Clean hob, extractor and grill pan
  • Empty, defrost and clean fridge and freezer; leave doors open
  • Clean inside and outside all cupboards and drawers
  • Clean sink, taps and drain
  • Clean dishwasher — filter, seals, run empty cleaner cycle
  • Clean washing machine — drawer, seal, run empty cleaner cycle
  • Wipe worktops, splashbacks and tiles
  • Wipe skirting boards and door frames
  • Empty bin; wash bin inside and out
  • Mop floor

Bathrooms

  • Descale bath, shower, screen, tiles and grout
  • Clean toilet, cistern, base and behind pipework
  • Clean basin, taps and mirror
  • Clean extractor fan cover
  • Clean silicone; treat visible mould
  • Empty bin, mop floor

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Clean inside wardrobes, drawers and shelving
  • Dust all reachable surfaces
  • Wipe skirting boards, door frames and doors
  • Wipe tops of doors and picture rails
  • Clean light fittings and switches
  • Hoover carpets thoroughly; steam or shampoo if requested
  • Mop hard floors
  • Clean windows inside; wipe sills and tracks

Hallways and stairs

  • Hoover carpet or mop floor
  • Wipe banister, spindles and doors
  • Clean any glass panels

Before handover

  • Take dated photos of every room
  • Bag rubbish and put in outside bin
  • Turn off power to non-essentials; leave heating on frost setting in winter
  • Return all keys to the agent
  • Keep the professional cleaning invoice for your records
