Deep cleaning checklist

A quarterly deep-cleaning checklist covering everything a regular clean skips. Allow 5–7 hours for a 3-bed house.

Kitchen

  • Clean inside oven, including racks and door glass
  • Clean extractor filter and outside of extractor
  • Empty, defrost (if needed) and clean inside fridge and freezer
  • Wipe inside cupboards; check for out-of-date food
  • Descale kettle
  • Move small appliances and clean underneath
  • Move fridge and cooker where possible and clean behind and beneath
  • Wash bin (inside and out)
  • Wipe skirting boards and tops of doors

Bathrooms

  • Deep-descale tiles, grout and shower screen
  • Clean shower head — soak in descaler
  • Clean silicone; check for mould
  • Wipe extractor fan and vent
  • Wipe skirting boards, door and door frame
  • Wash bath mat and shower curtain

All rooms

  • Wipe skirting boards and door frames
  • Wipe tops of doors and picture rails
  • Clean light fittings and lampshades (dust or wash)
  • Wipe light switches, sockets and thermostats
  • Hoover behind and under furniture (move sofas and beds)
  • Wash curtains or launder covers
  • Wipe inside windows including frames and sills

Extras (annual or as needed)

  • Professional carpet or upholstery shampoo
  • Wash walls if painted in a wipeable finish
  • Descale washing machine and dishwasher (run empty cycles with cleaner)
  • Wipe inside wardrobes and drawers
